What's in my meadow

This blog post is my way of having a record of what I've looked up 5x before and can't remember if I like it /want it /or not... Sigh. Anyhoo, each time I see a new item pop up in the meadow I investigate. I don't believe 'weed' as the answer, ever. MANY native and important pollinator plants are labeled weeds. A weed is any plant that is in a place you don't want it.

You know what I found annoying though? 99% of image searches show you the plant in full flower and height. I want to know what it is when it's just peeking up so I remove or pamper right away. So I made this resource and I'm sure those in the PNW will find it a helpful backyard identifier. Here's my method

  1. identify it with Google Lens - 90+% accuracy as tiny plants, which I've confirmed as I let them grow.

  2. In my local pollinator pdf guide - staying!

  3. Is it invasive? Annoying? - Sayonara!

  4. Spreads and has flowers and Native or not invasive - WELCOME to the party!

The plants listed below have all turned up in my clover lawn turned wild meadow in the last 2yrs. Joe Rich area of Kelowna BC.

Staying!

PUSSY TOES - Native Pollinator

YARROW - Native & Pollinator

And so dang cute waving in the breeze!

PINEAPPLE WEED / Wild Chamomile

When this started I was head over heels a bright mossy carpet.. well it doesn't stay that way, but it's cute and no

PURPLE TANSY

Self sowed from a nearby planting last year

Broadleaf PLANTAIN - Not Native but useful/medicinal and thrives under pressure

It has proliferated in an area of heavy foot traffic and it's tough like that, it pops up when soil is overly compacted.

CORN SPEEDWELL Low growing, green, cute blue flowers - heck yeah it's staying!

PURPLE VETCH

RED/PURPLE DEADNETTLE

HENBIT DEADNETTLE

DOVES FOOD CRANEBILL - Geranium

Sayonara!

Many of these plants MAY stay in another scenario, otherwise they'll be denoted in red

BLACK BINDWEED / WILD BUCKWHEAT

Everything will be a tangled mess quickly

HOARY ALYSSUM

SULPHUR CINQUEFOIL - INVASIVE

There's a GREAT Native Cinquefoil - you want that one. I was SOO bummed to discover that isn't what I have. HOW TO KNOW? Zoom in close! Are the hairs on the leaves & stems short and laying down? HAPPY DANCE - You've got Graceful Cinquefoil. If the hairs are longer and like they're at a rave? Get that sucker out of there!

PEPPERWEED - noxious

CRABGRASS

No real benefit to staying, it's highspreading with mass seed spray (1 plant last year has created an 8' skirt around it, The clover will crowd it out if i can keep it at bay thisyear;

HORSEWEED

Short now but will be far too tall for a meadow!

COMMON GROUNDSEL- Noxious

COMMON MALLOW - Many medicinal uses. Native Plant.

Have more than enough throughout the back area. MASS tap root, remove early if unwanted. Starts with a TEENY heart-shaped leaf.
